New book debates art education around the world

The 2006 InSEA conference’s aim was to facilitate debate in higher art-education on an international and multicultural basis. With global contributions, International Dialogues about Visual Culture, Education and Art reflects this aim, discussing themes in higher art-education in order to help solve global issues surrounding the subject. This diverse collection focuses on international themes in art education, ranging from discussions of educational policy and art theory to art projects based on international political issues. This political aspect of art education illustrated through community projects offers the volume to a wide audience, from art educators to scholars to those interested in the relationship between politics and art. International Dialogues about Visual Culture, Education and Art engages with new, often unheard voices, offering a representative discussion of global art-education issues.

New book surveys fifty years of design and looks to the future of the industry

In The Designer, Rosemary Sassoon surveys fifty years of change in the world of design, evaluating the skills that have been lost, how new techniques affect everyday work, and how training methods prepare students for employment. This indispensable volume reveals how design is both an art and a skill – one with a rich past and momentous relevance for the future. Sassoon provides a fascinating account of her own career from her beginnings at art school and an apprenticeship, with accounts of long-forgotten techniques of the art. This is an important study of design as an art and a skill – a practical tool with a rich past and relevance for the future.

The Designer
demonstrates how flexible attitudes and several lines of expertise work well in an ever-changing world. The book also includes contributions from eminent professionals in the field, focusing on the present and future roles designers play in society. Weaving together biography and career advice, theory and practice, The Designer provides a unique history of the art form and looks ahead to an age of ever-changing attitudes to drawing, aesthetics, and artistic practice.

Art education, Science, Technology and Culture collide in a new book from Intellect

The future of art and education is evolving, propelling artists into unknown territory in the new media age.

Educating Artists for the Future edited by Mel Alexenberg offers ground-breaking guidelines for higher art-education, focusing on the way that contemporary education must accept and reflect changes in digital and cultural systems. This is the first book concerned with educating artists for the post-digital age, and presents dynamic teaching strategies from a culturally diverse range of artists, researchers and teachers, focusing on student-concentrated, interactive learning. Alexenberg’s volume provides imaginative discussion for teaching the relationships between art and technology, recognising the complex balance between cultural pride and global awareness. Educating Artists for the Future charts the dissolving boundaries between science, technology, culture and art, redefining higher art-education.

The Soundtrack
is an exciting new journal exploring the aural elements, which combine with moving images. It regards the sounds which accompany the visuals not as a combination of disparate disciplines, but as a unified and coherent entity. Issue 1 (Feb 2008) includes an article about the soundtrack of the Coen Brothers' comedy Raising Arizona, which might make for interesting comparison with the brothers' latest release No Country for Old Men.

Journal of Community Music

For readers who wish for a basic starting point, we suggest that Community Music may be thought of as music teaching-learning interactions and transactions that occur ‘outside’ traditional music institutions (e.g., university music departments, public schools, conservatories) and/or music teaching-learning interactions and transactions that operate in relation to traditional institutions.

Creative Industries Journal

The Creative Industries Journal is primarily aimed at those studying and practising activities which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent, and which have a potential for wealth creation. These activities primarily take place in advertising, architecture, the art and antiques market, crafts, design, fashion, film, interactive leisure software, music, the performing arts, publishing, television and radio. The journal provides a forum to challenge definitional assumptions, advance the social, economic, cultural, and political understanding and engagement with the creative industries. Latest Issue of IQ – out now!

The Spring 2008 edition of IQ magazine is available now. IQ lets you in on all the latest releases and what the authors, editors and publishers at Intellect have to say! Why not take a look at what IQ has to offer this spring…

Hear what it is that makes Intellect stand out from the crowd in an exclusive interview with Intellect’s Marketing Manager, Sam King: ‘Intellect’s ethos is reflected in its particular production and editorial policies- for example, there is little editorial intervention in comparison with other publishers… Intellect strives to represent the author authentically rather than to appease the reader.

Read relevant and up-to-date articles, including David Cronenberg: An Author Looking for a Text, in which author Mark Browning explores the director’s adaptations of literary texts for the big screen, a fascinating Q & A session with the editors of the recently launched Journal of War and Cultural Studies, and Beatles fans won’t want to miss IQ’s interview with John Scheinfeld director of The U.S. vs. John Lennon.
