Art and Design Education for the 21st Century

Art and Design Education for the 21st Century International Conference

Sallis Benney Theatre,
University of Brighton, UK
Friday 6 and Saturday 7 February 2009

This international conference is being held as part of the 150th anniversary of the founding of Brighton School of Art, the ancestor of the current Faculty of Arts & Architecture at the University of Brighton.

Conference delegates will be invited to a Reception and Private Viewing of the From Art School to University: Art & Design at Brighton 1859-2009 exhibition in the adjacent University of Brighton Art Gallery.

The ways in which approaches to art and design education have changed over the past 150 years are a matter of historical record. Although this conference acknowledges the radical changes that have been enacted in the past, its focus is unambiguously forward looking. The role and significance of art and design education in the future, economically, socially and culturally, as well as the challenges that it will confront, will be the focus of this important event.

The selected international speakers are leaders in their fields and will speak from a variety of perspectives. The speakers are Professor Sir Christopher Frayling, Anne Burdick, Dr Darlie O Koshy, Professor Darren Newbury, Professor Elaine Aston and Professor Bruce Brown.

Intellect publishes a number of journals that explore the fields of Art and Design Education. Journal of Writing in Creative Practice is the official organ of the Writing Purposefully in Art and Design (Writing PAD) network. It offers art and design institutions an arena in which to explore and develop the notion of thinking through writing as a parallel to visual discourse in art and design practice. Art, Design and Communication in Higher Education develops research in arts and media based subjects in educational institutions. The journal’s range encompasses all areas of higher education, focusing upon practice-based education in fine art, theoretical studies of media, cultural studies, art and design history. Both journals will be available for delegates to view at the event.
