Despite the cancellation of the annual SCMS (Society for Cinema and Media Studies) conference, Intellect still travelled the hefty 26 hour door-to-door journey to the bright lights of Tokyo. Armed with the latest up-to-date info on publications including the forthcoming Directory of World Cinema: Japan, and the Journal of Japanese and Korean Cinema, we met with a host of organisations to showcase our publishing programme, and continue to raise the profile for Intellect internationally. We also met with Gilles Fauveau, a representative for our North American distributor the University of Chicago Press, who was busily preparing for Book Expo in New York.
Even though the intended conference programme was cancelled, Josai International University impressively managed to arrange a lively one day programme of panel discussion and debate, held on the Saturday. This was a great opportunity for us to offer information about our titles for those attending the sessions, and to keep film and media academics updated about our latest books and journals. We also showcased the first issue of our new visually-focussed film mag, The Big Picture.
Here are some pictures of sights along the way, including bookshops, film institutes and a few visual tastes of this dramatic metropolis; where tradition and trend, ancient culture and cutting-edge industry co-exist in fabulous extremes.
